I’ve been doing my best to follow along {again} with 31 Days to Clean on Facebook (with Christin from Joyful Mothering). It’s a great way to catch up on all those cleaning tasks I’ve been avoiding! On Day 4, the task is to clean the oven and microwave. The microwave isn’t an issue for me as I use these simple microwave cleaning tips. But the oven – well, I do not like to clean the oven (does anybody??).

In looking for alternatives for spray-on oven cleaner with all the chemicals and fumes, I searched the web and saw several ideas. The last time I cleaned my oven I tried one of those ideas – used a mixture of baking soda and water, sprayed it all over, let it dry and then cleaned it. It did work fairly well. This time I tried another idea – baking soda and lemon juice. Such a pleasant smell while cleaning!

Basically you put baking soda in a bowl and add lemon juice (it will foam up a bit) until you have a paste. Then smear that paste on and let sit for 30 minutes or so. Wipe off with a damp rag. You may still need to scrub a bit. I used this on the oven door glass first.

I didn’t think to take a before pic! The glass was so dirty I couldn’t see through it! This is the mixture spread on the glass.

After wiping off a corner – looking very good! And I wasn’t even patient enough to wait the 30 minutes – LOL!

Look at that glass! Not absolutely perfect, but I think it’s fantastic with not a whole lot of effort. After seeing this, I decided to use the baking soda/lemon juice mixture on the rest of the oven.

There’s my nice clean (except for the corners but I just didn’t want to spend much more time on it that day) oven bottom! And yes, my oven bottom comes out for cleaning! Cool, huh? It’s a newer oven and I knew that it was supposed to come out, but had never tried it because I thought there were screws to undo, etc. and I am lazy. Turns out that it just shifts and pops out. Guess I don’t have any excuse now.

This oven cleaner worked for me, but there are so many ideas for natural oven cleaners out there. What natural cleaners have worked for you? I would love it if you’d share your ideas!
