Sell Your Stuff

by Mandy on August 29, 2010

When you find yourself in need of some extra cash, one of the easiest ways to get some of it quickly is by selling stuff you have on hand.  You would be tremendously surprised at what all you have around the house that someone out there would be willing to buy! Trust me – I have learned from experience! :)

Go through your closets and cabinets, and even that laundry room shelf – pull out clothing, old furniture, kitchenware you don’t use, shoes, picture frames not in use, toys, books, movies – all of the above are easy money items!  I have sold all sorts of things at the following places:

  1. Ebay. The good thing about Ebay is that you can find buyers from all around the world, willing to buy just about anything out there!  The bad thing is that you have to pay a fee for your ad on Ebay whether your item sells or not, and if it does sell, then Ebay also gets a portion of your profits.
  2. Craigslist. I {heart} Craigslist!  I have bought and sold unbelievable amounts of things on Craigslist! Best part is – it’s totally free to list anything, and your ad is listed specific to your area! Local ads, local buyers.  And again, don’t question the “sell-ability” of anything you have! List it on there and wait for the customers to come in! :) Be careful though, as there are many scammers out there via Craigslist.  Use common sense when dealing with potential buyers!
  3. Yard Sales. Another one of my favorite avenues to eliminate clutter in our house, as well as adding in some extra cash to the monthly budget!  I have found without a doubt the best way to be successful at yard sales is to be organized!  Don’t wait till the night before the sale to start pricing and organizing.  While you are pricing things, keep in mind what you would be willing to pay for a similar item if you were the buyer.  Also, when you start to set up the sale tables, clothes racks, etc., try to group similar things together – have a table just for preschool toys and books, sort your clothes for sale by size, etc.  The more organized you are, the more likely you are to have people stick around to look!

I’m sure there are other options out there for making a little bit of cash fast, but these are the ones that have worked best for me!  All of them offer very little to no up-front investment, with great potential to earn!  And of course, another definite perk to all three is eliminating any unwanted clutter around your house! :)

What about you? What methods have you found for earning a quick buck? Any good/bad experiences with the ones I listed?

Happy Selling! :)

{By the way, did any of you see where I had the privilege of sharing part of our debt story over at Keeping the Kingdom First last week?}

We just had a garage sale this weekend. I usually take my old clothes and stuff to the local mission, but this time my pile was really big and the neighbors were having sales too. So, I put my stuff out and made some extra cash for our upcoming vacation! It was pretty easy since I already had everything sorted. I just needed to put them out on tables.

Hi!

I have been following your blog about 2 weeks now (like your style! :) The one you wrote today really hit home. Why? Because I run Grandma’s Garage Sale! It is a place to sell your stuff online. I started it this summer but everyone was busy with the kids at home. I think business will pick up.

I do not want this to be an unpaid for advertisement on your blog. I started Grandma’s Garage Sale to HELP people. Some places charge so many fees you do not make much money.

I have been running a special where you can run an item for a nickle. That would be 20 items for a dollar! So you see? I am not out to get rich.

Besides running it on my web site? I have a facebook page as well where your item will be featured. It is rough out there and we need all the help that we can get!

Love to you and yours and all of your readers! Grandma Patty Ann
