When we moved into this house in the fall, our land lady had asked that we not change the color of the walls throughout, which was no biggie to me since I know this is only temporary for us. However, the kids’ bathroom (also the guest bathroom) is painted none other than Army Green. So our bright, perky yellow rubber ducky decor from our previous home would. NOT. work! I wanted something cheery and friendly but also still kid-friendly, so I found this shower curtain at Target.
It’s a nice bright, whimsical print of trees and woodland creatures! Super cute!!
I found these other cute little accessories to place on the bathroom counter – the lamp was a frugal find from Family Dollar, and the basket was clearance at Target.
Then I hit a brick wall, and could not find anything I liked to hang on the walls in the bathroom. I don’t always look for things to hang on the wall of bathrooms, but this one has a rather large, blank wall that just needs something there! But again, this is a kids’ bathroom, so I didn’t want to go too fancy with anything. And for the life of me, I just could not find anything! When all else fails, do it yourself!!
I bought two 11 x 14 canvases at Big Lots, and used my collection of craft paints already on hand. Tip: You can use a water spray bottle and lightly mist the canvas as you paint to keep the base paint from becoming to “gloppy” on your canvas. {That’s a real technical term, I know.} But it is important that your base coat of paint be smooth and light if you are going to sketch out a design on the canvas, which is what I did next. After the base coat had dried, I penciled in the shapes of the trees and animals I wanted to paint, and then simply filled them in with the necessary colors.
Once all of that had dried and I finished all my “touch-ups”, I sprayed the canvases with a couple different light coats of clear acrylic sealer to protect them from the moisture in the bathroom. I just bought the cheapo stuff from Modge Podge in the craft section of Wal-Mart.
When the sealer dried, the pictures were ready to hang and admire!
Nothing too fancy, but definitely something cute for our kids’ bathroom. And I only spent about $10 total on the whole project! By the way, the shelf was a yard sale find – it was dark blue before, and the “swag” is made of clearance berry bushes from Target, tied together with Raffia I already had on hand! Cheap, cute bathroom decor certainly works for me!!
And one of these days, I’m actually going to remember to photograph each step in these processes, so that you guys can “watch me work”!

Wow – that looks wonderful!
I simply love this decor. I actually painted my master bathroom that color green! My bedroom is a darker shade. But I have a 1/2 bath in our son’s room that needs some less than grown up things on the large wall – so I am super excited to see your work. Thanks for sharing.
Stinkin’ cute, Mandy! Dang…I didn’t know you were so talented…hmmmm…I have a wall that could use some Mandism. Wanna visit the Ozarks?? ;-D
Look at your inner artist coming out! Love it! I so miss our Big Lots! It was my favorite store. Sometimes I drive an hour just to go to one in a nearby town. Great job Mandy!
