Gravitating

by Mandy on May 20, 2010

Our oldest son will be twelve years old in just less than a week.  It is so hard to believe he is that old already, and perhaps my denial of his age contributes to our being so unprepared for this stage!  This has been a rough year for all us, with many changes, but it has been most difficult for our son.  We moved seven hours away from his friends, his school, and his turf just as he was making the transition from elementary (childhood) to middle school (tween years).  Not the best time in the world to rock his world, I tell ya!

We have noticed over the last several years that our son tends to gravitate toward the questionable types of music, computer games, movies, and so on.  That gravitation has only increased since our move, likely because of his increased need to fit in.  However, we have now developed the issue of the wrong types of friendships, in addition to everything else.  It has become necessary to remind him on a daily basis of this verse:

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Philippians 4:8

I love this passage because it seems to cover all the bases – every possible filter for all the issues we are facing.  When I am faced with the “But, Mom, Why?!” question, I am able to reply with just one verse!  So far, we still run into the gravitation conflict quite often, but I have faith! The Lord promises His Word will not return void, and I am claiming that promise! I am praying over our son every day and reminding him of Philippians 4:8 in the hopes that his judgment will develop improve!

You might also add the camp verse from THE WILD: I Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
